"THE MEMORIAL CHAMBER
"At the heart of the Peace Tower is the Memorial Chamber — a commemoration to those who died in military service to Canada.
"Originally designed to honour the fallen from the First World War, the Memorial Chamber has evolved into a national memorial for all Canadian men and women who have died serving their country, during times of both war and peace, since Confederation.
"The Memorial Chamber is Gothic Revival in style, with its vaulted ceiling, graceful arches, stained glass windows and intricate carving. Many of the materials used in construction were taken from the battlegrounds where Canadians fought during the First World War.
"Dedicated in 1927, the Memorial Chamber is a quiet and reflective space, symbolizing sacrifice and loss. The Chamber houses the Books of Remembrance, commemorating over 118,000 Canadians who have died in service to Canada since Confederation. Every morning at 11 o'clock, the pages of the books are turned according to a calendar that ensures each page of each book is displayed at least once a year."

"Au cœur de la tour de la Paix se trouve la Chapelle du Souvenir, dédiée à la mémoire de ceux et celles qui ont donné leur vie au service du Canada.
"Conçue au départ pour honorer les soldats morts pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, la Chapelle du Souvenir est aujourd'hui dédiée à la mémoire de toutes les Canadiennes et de tous les Canadiens qui ont sacrifié leur vie pour leur pays, en temps de guerre et de paix, depuis la Confédération.
"De style néogothique, la Chapelle du Souvenir présente un toit en voûte, d'élégantes arches, des vitraux et des fines sculptures. De nombreux éléments entrant dans la construction de la Chapelle proviennent des champs de bataille où les Canadiens ont combattu pendant la Première Guerre mondiale.
"Inaugurée en 1927, la Chapelle du Souvenir est un sanctuaire de quiétude et de réflaxion qui symbolise la sacrifice et la perte. Ell abrite les Livres du Souvenir dans lesquels sont inscrits les noms de plus de 118 000 Canadiens qui sont morts au service du Canada depuis la Confédération. Tous les matins à 11 heurs, leurs pages sont tournées, selon le calendrier établi, de telle sorte que chaque page de chacun des livres est tournée au moins une fois par an."
Once in the chamber the security guards and tour guides are happy to let a visitor stay as long as they like. I took many photographs. There is so much detail in that relatively small room that there is much that I missed. You will need to visit the chamber to really appreciate it.
"The centrepiece of the Chamber is the main altar for the first Book of Remembrance commemorationg, 66,000 Canadians who died in the First World War. The ornate glass case containing the book is elevated on stone steps quarried from Flanders Fields, in Belgium."
